Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter | Add seven stops of control in bright light
Bright daylight can make it hard to use a slow shutter speed, even when that’s the look you want. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 2.1 filter reduces the light reaching your camera by seven stops, giving you more room to lengthen exposure. It’s for photographers who want to show movement in a scene, such as water flowing over rocks, or create a softer sense of motion in clouds. The 105mm size is an important part of choosing it: your filter setup needs to accept that size. ND 2.1 is the density rating, and seven stops describes the exposure reduction in practical terms. That makes this a strong filter for daylight situations where a modest reduction won’t be enough. It’s a focused tool for controlling exposure, rather than a filter that changes the subject or composition for you.
Putting seven stops to work
Seven stops gives you a clear starting point for planning the exposure. For example, if your unfiltered reading is 1/125 sec, adding seven stops brings the shutter speed to about one second at the same aperture and ISO. That’s long enough to make moving water appear smoother, while keeping the rest of your exposure settings consistent. Take a reading before fitting the filter, then extend the shutter time by seven stops. A tripod helps keep stationary details sharp during a long exposure; moving subjects will blur too, so choose the scene with that in mind.
Specialist Note
This 105mm filter gives you a direct way to turn a bright-day shutter speed into a long exposure, without having to stop down simply to cut the light. Its seven-stop reduction is enough to take a reading of 1/125 sec to roughly one second, which can soften flowing water while keeping rocks and riverbanks defined with a steady camera. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers whose filter setup accepts 105mm filters and who want to work with movement in daylight. The ND 2.1 rating is another way you’ll see that same strength described. One practical limit: a one-second exposure will blur anything that moves, so it won’t freeze leaves or people in the frame.
