Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Create long exposures in bright light

Bright daylight can leave you with shutter speeds that are too fast for the motion you want to show. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest is a 105mm neutral-density filter that cuts the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you room to use a much slower shutter speed. That makes it useful for smoothing moving water, softening passing clouds or capturing motion with a deliberate blur, even when the scene is bright. It also helps when you want to open the aperture in strong light without letting in more light than your exposure can handle. This is a strong-density filter, rather than a small adjustment for changing light by a fraction. It suits photographers who have a specific long-exposure or wide-aperture effect in mind and are comfortable setting exposure with care. The key benefit is straightforward: eight stops of light reduction can turn a shutter speed that freezes motion into one that records it.

Specialist Note

“Can this 105mm Firecrest give me genuinely long exposures in daylight?” Yes: its ND 2.4 rating cuts eight stops, which makes a real difference when you want motion blur rather than a frozen scene. For a stream, if your meter suggests 1/125 sec without the filter, eight stops brings that to about 2 seconds; set that exposure and the moving water can blur while the surroundings stay still. It can also help you keep a wider aperture in bright conditions. I’d choose it for planned, strong light reduction, not quick, subtle exposure changes—the density calls for a considered exposure.
