Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | Gain two stops of exposure control
The defining choice here is the 39mm filter size: it’s made for lenses that take this diameter, rather than being a one-size-fits-all accessory. The Firecrest ND is a neutral-density filter, so it reduces the light entering the lens while leaving you in control of your exposure settings. That’s useful when you want a slower shutter in daylight—for a softer impression of moving water, for instance—or when you want a wider aperture without overexposing the scene. It suits photographers with a lens that uses a 39mm filter thread who need a measured reduction in light, not an especially dark filter. Its best use is deliberate exposure adjustment: choose the shutter speed or aperture you want, then use the filter to help bring the exposure back into range. It’s a straightforward option for landscapes and other scenes where you want to manage motion or depth of field without changing the framing.
Specialist Note
Exposure changes are easy to plan with this filter: its two-stop reduction lets you move from 1/30 sec to about 1/8 sec in the same light, giving moving water more time to blur. The 39mm size means it’s for a lens with that filter-thread diameter, so it’s worth matching the filter size to the lens you plan to use. I’d recommend it for modest shutter-speed changes or a little more aperture flexibility outdoors, rather than trying to create a very long exposure in bright daylight. For example, two stops can take you from f/4 to f/2 if your lens offers that aperture. It’s a good fit for photographers who want a specific, controlled adjustment rather than a heavy light cut.
