Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 2.4 (8 stops) Filter | Slow the shutter in bright light
On a bright day, you may want moving water to blur or clouds to sweep across the frame, but a slow shutter speed can let in too much light. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 2.4 reduces the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you room to use longer exposures in those conditions. It’s a 46mm ND filter, so it suits a lens designed to take a filter of that diameter. This kind of light reduction is especially useful for deliberate motion blur, rather than simply making a scene darker for its own sake. It can also help you keep a wider aperture in bright light when you want to control depth of field. The strength is substantial: it gives you meaningful scope to extend exposure time, but it isn’t the filter to reach for when you only need a small adjustment.
Specialist Note
The Firecrest ND 2.4 gives you eight stops of light reduction when slowing the shutter without a filter would overexpose the scene. For a moving stream, that can turn a 1/125-second exposure into about two seconds, making the water appear smooth while the rocks stay defined. Its 46mm size matters at the lens: use it with a lens that takes 46mm filters, and the filter can do its job without changing your exposure plan. I’d point this toward landscape photographers who want motion blur in daylight. One caveat: eight stops is a strong reduction, so it may be more than you need for a subtle shutter-speed change.
