Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Create long exposures in bright light
Bright light can make a slow shutter speed impractical, even when you want the movement of water or clouds to blur. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 3 filter reduces the light reaching your camera by ten stops, giving you room to use a much longer exposure in those conditions. Its 62mm size is for a matching filter setup. This makes it a focused option for photographers who want to deliberately record motion or work with a wider aperture in bright surroundings, rather than simply darken an image. Use it when the scene is too bright for the shutter speed or aperture you want; it gives you control over exposure without asking you to change the look you’re aiming for. The ten-stop reduction is substantial, so it’s particularly suited to planned, slower-shutter work. It’s less suited to quick changes between shots, where that much light reduction may be inconvenient.
Specialist Note
“Does the Firecrest ND 3 really cut ten stops? Yes—and that’s a strong reduction, not a subtle trim. If you’re photographing moving water, that extra exposure time can turn ripples into a smoother sweep; start with your normal metered exposure, then account for the ten-stop reduction. For example, 1/60 sec becomes roughly 17 seconds at the same aperture and ISO, so a tripod is sensible. The 62mm size matters too: it’s for a lens or filter setup marked 62mm, so match that diameter before planning your shot. I’d suggest this to someone who enjoys composing a frame and letting motion build into it; for fast-changing scenes, ten stops can be more than you need.”
