Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Make bright-day exposures eight stops longer
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 77mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter cuts the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you room to use a much slower shutter in bright conditions. It’s aimed at photographers who want movement to register across a longer exposure, rather than freezing every detail. Try it on flowing water, where a shutter speed around 1 second can soften the movement; without the filter, start by metering the scene, then account for the eight-stop reduction. It can also help when you want a slower shutter in daylight, though the result depends on your chosen exposure and the light. This is a strong fit for deliberate landscape work and other scenes where motion is part of the picture. The density is fixed, so it’s for situations where an eight-stop reduction suits the shot, not for fine-tuning the strength as you compose.
Specialist Note
At a sunlit river, the water is moving but the scene is bright; this is where an eight-stop filter earns its place. If your meter suggests 1/250 sec without the filter, adding eight stops brings you close to a 1-second exposure, which gives the water time to blur. The 77mm size means matching it to a lens with a 77mm filter thread; it’s worth checking that measurement on the lens before choosing. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want a pronounced slow-shutter effect in daylight. One trade-off: ND 2.4 is a fixed strength, so it won’t give you a lighter reduction when eight stops is too much.
