Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 0.9 (3 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 100x100mm Neutral Density 0.9 (3 Stops) | Give moving water a softer look
When a stream looks lively but your shutter speed freezes every ripple, a neutral density filter can help you let in less light and use a longer exposure. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra filter is a 100x100mm square filter with a 0.9 neutral density rating, equivalent to three stops of light reduction. That gives you room to lengthen the shutter time while keeping your aperture and ISO unchanged. For example, a 1/30 sec exposure becomes 1/4 sec with three stops of reduction. It’s suited to landscape photographers and anyone making deliberate use of motion blur in water, clouds or passing movement. The square format makes it a practical option for a compatible square-filter setup. Its strength is a measured exposure change, rather than an extreme reduction for very long exposures in bright conditions.
Specialist Note
The 100x100mm square gives you a clear physical size to work around: it’s for a square-filter setup that accepts that format, rather than a screw-in filter thread. The 0.9 rating means three stops, so I’d use it when you want motion to register without losing control of the rest of the exposure. For a stream, for instance, start with the shutter speed you’d use without the filter and multiply the exposure time by eight; 1/30 sec becomes 1/4 sec at the same aperture and ISO. It suits landscape work particularly well. Just bear in mind that three stops won’t turn every bright-day scene into a very long exposure.
