Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 105mm Neutral Density 6.6 (22 Stop) | Make very long exposures in bright light
A 22-stop reduction is what sets this neutral density filter apart: it cuts the light reaching the camera enough to make very long exposures possible, even when the scene is bright. It suits photographers who want to render movement as a soft blur, such as smoothing flowing water or letting clouds drift across a landscape, rather than freezing every detail. The 105mm size is useful when your lens setup takes this filter size; the high density is the defining feature to plan around. At 22 stops, exposure times grow dramatically, so this is a specialist tool for deliberate long-exposure work, not a filter you’ll leave on for everyday shooting. Work out the exposure before fitting it, then add the filter’s 22-stop reduction to your calculation. That makes it easier to get the slow shutter speed you want without relying on guesswork.
Specialist Note
New owners often underestimate how much a 22-stop filter changes exposure; it’s easy to choose a shutter speed that still isn’t long enough for the effect you want. With this Firecrest Ultra, plan the exposure first, then account for all 22 stops. As a guide, a metered 1/125 second becomes roughly 8 minutes and 44 seconds, which can turn moving water into a smooth surface. The 105mm size matters too: make sure your filter arrangement is built around that size before planning a shot. I’d consider it for carefully composed landscapes and flowing water, but the density is a real limitation for ordinary handheld photography.
