Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 0.3 (1 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 0.3 (1 Stop) | Subtle light control for considered exposures
You can make a moving subject feel softer or open the aperture a little wider, without making a dramatic change to your exposure. This neutral-density filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you a small, controlled adjustment when the scene is just a little too bright for the look you want. It suits photographers who want to make modest exposure changes while keeping their framing and composition as they are. Think of it as a fine adjustment rather than a tool for turning bright daylight into a very long exposure. It’s especially useful when a small shift in shutter speed or aperture is enough to shape the picture. The filter’s modest effect also makes it easier to work in small exposure steps, rather than committing to a much darker image all at once.
Where a small exposure change helps
A neutral-density filter can help when you want to slow the shutter slightly to suggest movement in a stream, or use a wider aperture in bright conditions. It doesn’t choose the exposure for you; you’ll still set your shutter speed or aperture to suit the scene. The benefit is having a little more room to make that choice without changing the composition.
Specialist Note
First-time ND buyers sometimes choose a much stronger reduction than they need; this one is intended for a measured adjustment. Its ND 0.3 rating is a one-stop reduction, so for a static scene you could, for example, move from 1/125 sec to about 1/60 sec while keeping the same aperture and ISO. The 55mm size matters when you’re choosing a filter for a lens: it needs to match that lens’s filter thread. I’d consider it for gentle movement in water or a slightly wider aperture in bright light. One stop is deliberately modest, so it won’t create a very long exposure in strong daylight.
