Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 1.8 (6 Stops) | Make long exposures in bright light
Bright conditions can leave you choosing between a shutter speed that freezes motion and an aperture you’d rather not use. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 1.8 reduces the light reaching the camera by six stops, giving you room to make those choices without waiting for the light to fade. It’s useful when you want moving water or passing clouds to blur, or when you need a slower shutter speed in daylight for a deliberate look. The 58mm size is the key fit detail: it’s intended for a lens taking a 58mm filter. This is a focused tool for photographers who work in bright light and want to manage exposure through shutter speed or aperture. Its strength is the fixed six-stop reduction; it won’t give you variable strength in one filter, so plan around that amount of light loss.
Specialist Note
“How much light does this 58mm Firecrest Ultra take away?” Six stops, so it’s a substantial reduction rather than a subtle tweak. If a daylight exposure is 1/250 sec, six stops brings it to about 1/4 sec at the same aperture and ISO—handy for softening a stream or smoothing movement, ideally with the camera supported on a tripod. The 58mm designation matters just as much: it suits a lens made for 58mm filters, so you can match it by filter diameter rather than guessing from the camera body. I’d recommend it to someone with a clear use for long exposures in bright conditions. For quickly changing scenes, the fixed six-stop strength takes a little exposure planning.
