Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 58mm Neutral Density 2.4 (8 Stops) | Create long exposures in bright light
Bright daylight can make a slow shutter speed impractical: even at a low ISO, the image may become too bright before you can capture the motion you want. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra Neutral Density filter reduces the light reaching the camera, giving you more room to use a longer exposure or a wider aperture. That makes it useful for photographers who want to soften moving water, show movement in clouds, or manage depth of field outdoors in strong light. Its neutral-density purpose is to reduce light rather than add colour or detail to a scene. The 58mm size is a key fit consideration: it’s intended for a lens that accepts a 58mm filter. If you enjoy making deliberate exposure choices instead of letting bright conditions dictate your shutter speed, this filter gives you a straightforward way to do that.
Specialist Note
At 1/250 sec, an eight-stop reduction brings the exposure to roughly one second, assuming the aperture and light stay the same. That’s a useful starting point for smoothing a stream or adding visible movement to clouds. The 2.4 density is the rating behind that eight-stop reduction; it’s a strong cut, so I’d reach for it when bright conditions are limiting a deliberately slow shutter, not as an everyday filter in fading light. The 58mm diameter means you’ll need a lens with a matching filter thread. I’d recommend it to someone who plans exposures carefully and wants that substantial light reduction in a known size.
