Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 6.0 (20 Stop) | Turn bright scenes into long exposures
Without a very dense neutral density filter, long exposures in daylight often mean waiting for dimmer light or accepting a much shorter shutter time. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra is made for photographers who want to extend exposures while working in bright conditions. It suits landscape and architecture photographers, and anyone aiming to soften moving water, stretch cloud movement or reduce the visibility of people moving through a scene. The effect is especially useful when you want motion blur without changing the look of the composition. This is a specialist-strength filter rather than a subtle exposure adjustment: it gives you room to work with shutter speeds that ordinary daylight would usually rule out. Plan the exposure carefully, because a small change in light or framing can matter during a long capture.
Plan the exposure
Use your camera’s meter to find a starting exposure before fitting the filter, then calculate the longer shutter time and keep the camera steady throughout. For example, a metered 1/1000-second exposure becomes roughly 17 minutes 28 seconds after a 20-stop reduction, with aperture and ISO unchanged. That’s a useful scale to plan around: long exposures need patience, and the light can shift while the shutter is open.
Specialist Note
“Is the Firecrest Ultra 77mm Neutral Density 6.0 strong enough for a genuinely long daylight exposure?” Yes — its 20-stop reduction is meant for exactly that sort of control. The 77mm size tells you what filter size your lens setup needs to accept, so match that before planning a shot. ND 6.0 is an extremely dense level of filtration; I’d suggest it to landscape photographers smoothing water or architecture photographers blurring passing movement in a bright scene. Meter first, calculate the extended time, then use a tripod and keep the framing fixed. One honest point: exposures can run into many minutes, so it’s less suited to quick, reactive shooting.
