Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) | Control daylight exposure and motion
For smoothing moving water or stretching a daylight exposure, this neutral density filter cuts the light reaching the camera so you can use a slower shutter speed without changing the scene. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 1.2 (4 Stops) reduces exposure by four stops, giving you room to manage bright conditions with shutter speed or aperture rather than relying only on a narrower aperture. It suits landscape photographers working with rivers, fountains or moving cloud, and portrait photographers who want to keep their chosen aperture in daylight. A slower shutter can turn ripples into a softer surface; holding a wider aperture can keep the background less defined. Its fixed strength makes the exposure change predictable. Choose it when a moderate, clearly defined cut in light is what your shot needs.
Specialist Note
This filter gives you a practical four-stop shift for softening moving water: if the unfiltered exposure is 1/60 sec, four stops takes it to about 1/4 sec at the same aperture and ISO. I’d use that change for a stream or fountain when you want visible motion blur without altering your framing. The 82mm size is the lens filter diameter to match, so choose it for a lens with a corresponding 82mm thread, not by camera body size. It can also help you retain a wide aperture in bright light. One limit: in strong sun, four stops may not be enough for very long exposures.
