H&Y K-Series 100 x 100mm ND1000 HD MRC ND Filter
H&Y K-Series 100 x 100mm ND1000 HD MRC ND Filter | Make long exposures in bright light
Bright light can make it difficult to use a slow shutter speed, even when that’s the look you want. The H&Y K-Series ND1000 reduces the light reaching your camera, giving you room to make longer exposures in daylight. Its ND1000 rating means roughly a ten-stop reduction, which can turn moving water into a softer blur or let clouds move through a long exposure. It’s aimed at photographers who want to control shutter speed in bright conditions, particularly for landscape and architectural scenes. The 100 x 100mm square format gives you a defined filter size for setups that use square filters. A dense filter like this calls for a deliberate exposure adjustment: a shutter speed that starts at 1/125 sec becomes about 8 seconds after the reduction. That’s a substantial change, and exactly the point when ordinary settings are too fast for the effect you want.
Specialist Note
An ND1000 is too strong to leave on for everyday shooting, but that’s why it’s the right tool when bright conditions are getting in the way of a long exposure. For a stream or waterfall, take a meter reading without the filter, then extend the shutter time by about a thousand times; 1/125 sec becomes roughly 8 sec. The 100 x 100mm square format is worth keeping in mind when choosing how to use it: your filter setup needs to accommodate that size. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want movement in water or clouds, and I’d use a tripod for those multi-second exposures. It’s a specialist filter, not an all-purpose one.
