Without an ND filter, bright light can force you to use a faster shutter speed or a narrower aperture than you want. This variable ND filter gives you another way to manage exposure: adjust the amount of light reaching the camera across its ND2–ND32 range. That’s a useful span for outdoor video, where you may want to keep your chosen shutter speed, and for stills when you’d like to use a wider aperture in daylight. It suits photographers and filmmakers whose lens has an 82mm filter thread and who want to change light reduction with one filter rather than swap between fixed strengths. The range works out to roughly one to five stops of light reduction. It won’t replace a stronger ND filter when you need a very long exposure in bright conditions, but it offers practical control for more everyday exposure adjustments.

Specialist Note

Its ND32 limit is the main thing to keep in mind: five stops of reduction won’t cover every bright-day long-exposure situation. For outdoor video or portraits, though, this range gives you useful room to manage exposure without changing the filter. If your meter calls for 1/1000 sec, five stops of reduction brings that to about 1/30 sec, which can help when you’re aiming for smoother motion. The 82mm diameter is the fit to check against your lens’s filter thread. I also like that the frame is copper; it gives this version a distinctive finish, though the practical reason to choose it is the variable density.
