Marumi Grey Filter DHG ND64 72 mm
Marumi Grey Filter DHG ND64 72 mm | Six stops of light control for longer exposures
The ND64 density is the defining feature of this Marumi filter: it cuts the light reaching your lens enough to make long exposures possible in daylight. It suits photographers who want to show movement in water or clouds, or who need more freedom to choose a wide aperture when the scene is bright. With six stops of reduction, a metered shutter speed of 1/60 sec can become about 1 sec without changing the aperture or ISO. That gives flowing water time to blur while the surrounding scene stays still, provided the camera is supported. The 72 mm size is intended for lenses with a matching 72 mm filter thread, so it’s important to match the filter diameter to the lens. This is a focused tool for reducing light, rather than a filter for changing colour or adding effects.
Specialist Note
64 means the filter passes one sixty-fourth of the light, which works out to six stops of reduction. For a stream or waterfall, that can turn 1/60 sec into roughly 1 sec at the same aperture and ISO; use a tripod to keep the rocks and banks sharp while the water softens. The 72 mm diameter matters at the lens, not the camera body: it suits a lens with a 72 mm filter thread. I’d recommend it to someone deliberately working with longer exposures or wide apertures in bright conditions. One limit: six stops may still leave a shutter speed that’s too fast for very long exposures in strong daylight.
