Meike 85mm f/1.8 AF STM Pro Nikon Z Mount | Portraits with pleasing background separation

Meike 85mm f/1.8 AF STM Pro Nikon Z Mount combines an 85mm short-telephoto view with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture for portraits with a softly separated background. It’s built for Nikon Z photographers who want a dedicated lens for people, from planned portraits to changing moments at events. The 85mm focal length gives you room to frame a face or a small group without getting right up close, while autofocus helps keep focusing straightforward as expressions change. Open the aperture to f/1.8 when you want your subject to draw attention against a less distinct background, or when the available light is fading. This is a prime lens, so you’ll need to move yourself to change the framing rather than zoom. That makes it particularly suited to photographers who know they want a portrait-focused view and are happy to work within it.

Specialist Note

At 85mm, the framing encourages you to give your subject a little space; that’s a comfortable way to make portraits feel composed rather than rushed. I’d start at f/1.8 for a single-person portrait when you want the background to fall away, then stop down if you need more of the face in focus. For an event, autofocus is useful when expressions shift quickly, and the bright aperture gives you room to work in dimmer settings. This suits portrait makers and event photographers who want one clear role from a lens. The trade-off is fixed framing: you’ll need to step back for a wider view, so allow yourself room to move.
