Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Nikon Z-Mount
Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II Nikon Z-Mount | Portraits with room to breathe
A quiet portrait by a window is where this lens earns its place: the 58mm focal length gives you a natural-feeling view, while the f/1.5 maximum aperture lets you work with a softly out-of-focus background. The Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II is a standard prime lens for Nikon Z, made for photographers who want to set focus themselves and take their time with a frame. It’s especially suited to portraits, from a considered head-and-shoulders composition to a more relaxed environmental portrait. Open the aperture to f/1.5 when you want to separate your subject from a busy setting or make the most of available light. Stop down when you’d rather have more of the scene in focus. This is a focused, deliberate way to photograph; it suits patient portraits better than moments where your subject is moving quickly.
Specialist Note
The manual-focus ring puts the point of focus under your control, which suits portraits where you can take a moment to place it carefully. For a head-and-shoulders portrait, focus on the nearer eye and try f/1.5 for a softer background; that wide aperture also helps when the light indoors is modest. On a Nikon Z DX body, the 58mm view frames like an 87mm lens on full frame, a useful perspective for tighter portraits. The honest trade-off is that manual focus asks for care with moving subjects. I’d favour it for a posed portrait or a calm window-light session, rather than a fast, unpredictable moment.
