Nikon Forestry Pro II

Nikon Forestry Pro II: Measure distances and tree heights

Judging the distance to a tree is one thing; working out its height when you can’t see both ends is another. The Nikon Forestry Pro II is a laser rangefinder with a measuring range of 7.5 to 1,600 metres, plus a three-point measurement function for finding an object’s height when its top and base aren’t both visible. That makes it useful for forestry work, checking the height of trees, and measuring distances to objects in the field. Its 6x viewfinder helps you locate the target, while Hyper Read returns a result on the internal display in about three seconds. You can also keep a record of up to 250 measurements in the built-in logbook, a useful detail when several readings need to be kept together. The body is waterproof to 1 metre for up to 10 minutes, and the compact size means it can fit in an inner pocket on the way out. This is a focused measuring tool rather than a general-purpose optic: its appeal is the combination of long-range distance measurement and height readings from three points. The supplied CR2 battery means it’s ready to use once fitted.

Field Measurement Highlights

• 7.5–1,600 m measuring range: Take distance readings across a broad span, from nearby objects to targets well downrange. That range is useful when you need to measure from your position rather than approach the object.
• Three-point height measurement: Find the height of an object even when you can’t see both its top and its base. It’s particularly relevant when measuring trees, where branches or terrain can obscure one end.
• Hyper Read function: Results appear on the internal display in approximately three seconds. That short wait keeps the measuring process moving when you’re taking readings across multiple objects.
• 6x viewfinder: The built-in viewing optics magnify the target six times, giving you a closer view when aiming the rangefinder at an object at a distance.
• Logbook for 250 measurements: Store up to 250 readings in the built-in logbook. That capacity is handy for keeping a set of measurements available on the device instead of relying on a single result.
• Waterproof body: The Forestry Pro II is rated waterproof to 1 metre for up to 10 minutes. This offers reassurance when field conditions involve water, though it’s not a reason to leave the rangefinder submerged.
• Compact format: Its compact body fits in an inner pocket, so it’s easy to carry when heading out to take measurements. The form is suited to bringing the instrument along rather than leaving it behind as bulky equipment.
