An integrated 1.25x teleconverter gives this super-telephoto zoom extra reach without needing to change lenses. It’s a specialist option for bird and wildlife photographers, and for sports shooters who need to frame distant action tightly. The 150-400mm range gives a full-frame-equivalent field of view of 300-800mm on a Micro Four Thirds camera, so subjects can fill the frame from a considerable distance. Optical image stabilisation helps when you’re working handheld at those long focal lengths. The zoom range also lets you adjust framing as a bird moves between branches or an athlete crosses the field, rather than losing the moment while changing position. This lens makes most sense when long reach is central to your photography; it’s a substantial, specialised tool, not an everyday walk-around zoom.

Specialist Note

The OM SYSTEM 150-400mm is at its best when you need to keep distant birds large in the frame. Its f/4.5 maximum aperture gives you more light to work with as the day dims, which can help you hold a faster shutter speed; for a bird in flight, I’d start around 1/1600 sec and raise ISO if needed. The built-in 1.25x teleconverter is handy when a subject stays just out of reach: engage it to tighten the framing without swapping lenses.
