Rodenstock Variond Extended 62
Rodenstock Variond Extended 62 | Control light for creative exposures
Bright conditions can make it hard to choose a slower shutter speed or a wider aperture without overexposing the picture. The Rodenstock Variond Extended 62 is a gray ND filter, designed to reduce the light reaching the camera. That makes it useful when you want movement to blur in a daylight scene, or when you want to keep a wider aperture in bright surroundings. It suits photographers who want more control over exposure than the available light allows, particularly for considered landscape, water and motion images. The result depends on the exposure you choose: use the filter, then adjust shutter speed or aperture to suit the effect you want. An ND filter doesn’t create blur by itself; your settings do. This is the kind of tool to reach for when changing the camera settings alone won’t give you the exposure you’re after.
Specialist Note
“Is the Rodenstock Variond Extended 62 a gray ND filter?” Yes—that’s how it’s classified, so its purpose is to reduce light rather than add a colour effect. I’d consider it when you want a longer exposure for moving water or clouds: fit the filter, then lengthen the shutter speed until the movement renders the way you want. It can also help you use a wider aperture in bright light. The “62” is part of this product’s exact name, so keep it with the model name when you’re identifying the version you need. It suits photographers who want exposure control, but the filter alone won’t determine the final look; your settings do.
