Rycote Stereo Duck Raincover AE
Rycote Stereo Duck Raincover AE | Weather cover for stereo location sound
The defining choice is a raincover made for the Rycote Stereo Duck setup: its purpose is to let you keep recording when rain threatens, rather than leave the microphone exposed. This is an accessory for sound recordists and filmmakers working outdoors who use that named stereo setup and want rain protection as part of their kit. Its clearest use is location recording in changeable weather, from outdoor dialogue to environmental sound. The name tells you what it’s intended for, but it doesn’t tell us the cover’s material, fit details or level of weather resistance, so I wouldn’t treat it as a reason to work through severe conditions. Think of it as a protective layer for a specific microphone arrangement, not a general-purpose cover for other gear. If your recording plans depend on a particular fit or weather rating, those details matter before you head out.
For ambience, the stereo arrangement matters as much as having weather protection: preserve the scene’s left-to-right perspective as you position the microphone. For outdoor dialogue, place the microphone for the voices first, then use the raincover with the setup it’s named for. That keeps the decision focused on what this product is: a raincover for the Rycote Stereo Duck, rather than an all-purpose microphone accessory.
Specialist Note
Sound recordists capturing outdoor ambience or location dialogue are the people I’d point towards this Rycote raincover. “Stereo” means a two-channel recording, so for a passing vehicle or a broad outdoor soundscape, keep the microphone’s left-right orientation consistent with the scene; that’s what preserves a useful sense of direction. The Raincover part of the name is the practical reason to consider it when showers threaten a recording. I’d use it with the Stereo Duck setup it’s named for, not assume it fits other microphones. And I wouldn’t read “raincover” as a promise that prolonged or driving rain is harmless—think of it as added protection, not permission to ignore the weather.
