Tiffen 44CGN12H 4x4 CLR/ND1.2 Grad HE Filter
Tiffen 44CGN12H 4x4 CLR/ND1.2 Grad HE Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
Balancing a bright sky with a darker foreground is the job of a graduated neutral-density filter: it helps retain detail across a scene with a strong difference in brightness. The Tiffen 44CGN12H 4x4 CLR/ND1.2 Grad HE Filter has a clear-to-density graduation, so you can place its denser area over the brighter part of the composition while keeping the clearer area over the foreground. It suits photographers and filmmakers working with high-contrast scenes, especially landscapes and views with a clear horizon. The 4x4 format is intended for filter setups that use this square format. Use the graduation to manage brightness within the frame, rather than darkening the whole image as a uniform filter would. It’s a focused tool for shaping the balance between sky and land; the scene needs to suit a graduated edge.
Specialist Note
A bright sky can lose its detail before the land below it looks right, and this filter is made to address that mismatch in the frame. The 4x4 format gives you a square filter to position across the composition, while the CLR/ND1.2 Grad designation tells you it combines a clear area with graduated density. For a landscape with a relatively level horizon, place the denser area over the sky and line up the graduation with the horizon; for a bright window above a darker interior, position it across the window area instead. It suits controlled compositions best. With trees or buildings breaking up the skyline, the graduated boundary can be harder to hide.
