Tiffen 44HOSTR 4x4 Hollywood Star Filter
Tiffen 44HOSTR 4x4 Hollywood Star Filter | Give bright highlights a star-like finish
A night scene can have just a few bright points—a streetlamp, a sign or reflections on glass—that you’d like to make part of the picture’s character. The Tiffen 44HOSTR is a Hollywood Star filter, designed to turn those highlights into a more graphic feature in the image. It’s a specialist effect filter for photographers and filmmakers who want that look while making the image, rather than adding it later. The 4x4 format makes it relevant to setups built around filters of that size. Use it when the scene has distinct light sources or bright reflections; without those, the effect has little to work with. This filter is about shaping highlights, not simply protecting the front of a lens or reducing ultraviolet light. Its appeal is the visible, stylised result, so it suits deliberate creative work better than scenes where you want highlights to stay unobtrusive.
Specialist Note
This filter gives bright points a deliberate star pattern without relying on a post-production effect. The Hollywood Star designation is the key here: use it when a lamp or a sharp reflection should become part of the image’s design, rather than just a bright patch. Its 4x4 format means it belongs in a setup that takes 4x4 filters, so it’s worth matching that format to your existing filter arrangement. I’d use it for a night street scene or for controlled reflections in a product shot, keeping distinct light sources in the composition so the effect has something to work on. It’s a committed look, not a subtle general-purpose filter; busy highlights can compete with the subject.
