Tiffen 44PM14 4x4 Pro-Mist 1/4 Filter
Tiffen 44PM14 4x4 Pro-Mist 1/4 Filter | A gentle diffusion look in a 4x4 format
Bright practical lights or sunlit highlights can look a little too crisp for the mood you want. The Tiffen 44PM14 is a Pro-Mist filter for shaping that look in camera, rather than adding the effect later in editing. Its 1/4 grade offers a measured level of diffusion, making it a sensible starting point when you want a softer highlight character without choosing a stronger grade straight away. The 4x4 format suits a square-filter workflow, so it’s worth considering for filmmakers and photographers who already work with that format. Use it for scenes where you want light sources to feel less hard and the image to take on a gentler, more atmospheric quality. This is a creative filter, not a neutral filter: its purpose is to change how the image looks.
Specialist Note
For taking the hard edge off bright highlights in camera, the Tiffen 44PM14 gives you a dedicated Pro-Mist treatment rather than a correction to recreate later. I’d point it out to filmmakers shaping a softer look around practical lights, or photographers who want a gentler rendering of bright areas in a portrait. The 1/4 grade is a restrained place to begin; it lets you explore diffusion without jumping to a heavier treatment. Its 4x4 format is relevant if your working setup is built around square filters. Just keep in mind that this is a visible creative effect, so it won’t suit every scene.
