Tiffen 44VSTR 4x4 Vector Star Filter
Tiffen 44VSTR 4x4 Vector Star Filter | Turn bright points into star effects
Tiffen 44VSTR 4x4 Vector Star Filter is a 4x4-format filter for adding a star effect to bright points in your image. It’s for photographers and filmmakers who want to make highlights part of the composition, rather than leave them as plain spots of light. The effect is most apparent when small, bright sources sit against a darker scene: think street lamps after dusk or reflected lights in a carefully arranged still life. Keep those highlights in the frame and use their placement to guide the viewer’s eye; the filter gives them a distinctive star-like appearance. This is a creative effect filter, so it suits deliberate, selective use better than scenes where you want every highlight to look natural. The 4x4 format also makes it a choice for setups designed around square filters. If you’re after a restrained image with no added star effect, this isn’t the filter to reach for.
Specialist Note
Point lights take on a star-like look as soon as they’re part of the shot, so you can build the effect into your composition rather than add it later. I’d suggest trying it with night-time street lamps: keep a few small, bright lamps in the frame and let the darker surroundings make their shape easy to read. It also suits still-life work with bright reflections, placed where you want the eye to pause. The 4x4 format is a useful detail to plan around when choosing your filter setup, while “Vector Star” tells you this is about shaping highlights, not simply protecting a lens. Keep it for scenes where that effect is intentional; it can distract when every highlight should stay plain.
