Tiffen 4565BSG4 4x5.650 Black Soft Glow 4 Filter
Tiffen 4565BSG4 4x5.650 Black Soft Glow 4 Filter | A softer glow for highlights
Without a diffusion filter, bright points in a frame can look crisp and sharply defined. The Tiffen Black Soft Glow 4 is for shaping that look in-camera, giving highlights a softer, glowing character rather than leaving them completely hard-edged. It suits cinematographers and image-makers who want a visibly softened treatment as part of the image, instead of relying solely on adjustments later. Try it on a backlit portrait, where light around the subject can become part of the mood, or use it with practical lights in a night scene to give those sources a gentler presence. The effect is an intentional stylistic choice, not a neutral correction: it changes the feel of the image. If your brief calls for clean, crisp highlights, this is probably not the filter to reach for. For a more atmospheric frame, it offers a direct way to introduce glow while shooting.
Specialist Note
For a candlelit close-up, I’d consider the Tiffen’s Black Soft Glow look when you want the light itself to feel less clinical. Its 4x5.650 format gives you a specific size to match to your filter setup, so check that against the equipment you plan to use. The “4” designation is useful when you’re choosing this particular grade deliberately; keep that choice consistent across shots when continuity matters. I’d suggest it to filmmakers building a soft, atmospheric image around practical lights or backlight. It’s a character filter, though, so it won’t suit every scene: if the job depends on crisp, unsoftened highlights, leave it out.
