Tiffen 4565BSG5 4x5.650 Black Soft Glow 5 Filter
Tiffen 4565BSG5 4x5.650 Black Soft Glow 5 Filter | Gives highlights a soft glow
Without a diffusion filter, bright highlights stay crisp and the image keeps its harder, more direct rendering. The Tiffen 4565BSG5 4x5.650 Black Soft Glow 5 is for filmmakers and image-makers who want a soft-glow character in the shot itself, rather than adding that look later. Its name sets out the essentials: a Black Soft Glow treatment, grade 5, in a 4x5.650 filter format. Use it when you want bright sources to bloom and the image to feel less clinical, while keeping the scene’s shapes readable. It suits considered portrait work, beauty images and scenes where practical lights or reflections help create the mood. This isn’t a neutral filter to leave in place unnoticed; its value is the visible character it adds. Think about the effect as you light and frame, then decide whether that softness belongs in the final image. It’s a deliberate look, not a general-purpose correction.
Specialist Note
For a close portrait, I’d use the grade 5 when I want a bright highlight to carry a visible haze instead of looking pin-sharp. The 4x5.650 format is a good fit for a workflow already set up for filters in that size, so it’s worth matching your filter setup to the format before planning a shot around it. To bring out the glow, place a practical light or bright reflection near the subject and compare a clean take with the filtered version. This suits image-makers who want to shape a clearly softened look in-camera. The honest trade-off is that grade 5 is a committed effect: leave it out when crisp, neutral rendering is the priority.
