Tiffen FW3STR43 Filter Wheel 3 Star 4PT 3mm
Tiffen FW3STR43 Filter Wheel 3 Star 4PT 3mm | Give point lights a four-point sparkle
The defining choice is the four-point star effect: this Tiffen filter turns small, bright light sources into visible four-point accents in the image. It suits photographers who want that effect to be part of the picture, rather than adding sparkle later in editing. Think night scenes with distinct street lights, or a tabletop image where a candle flame is meant to draw the eye. The title identifies this as the 3 Star 4PT version, with a 3mm designation. Those details matter when you’re choosing a specific look; they’re more useful than treating it as a general-purpose filter. Keep the bright sources clearly visible in your composition and the star effect has something to work with. It’s a specialised creative filter, so it’s best chosen for scenes where point highlights belong in the finished image—not as an everyday filter for every subject.
Where the effect works
Look for small, distinct highlights: lamps against a darker street, or a bright flame against a simple background. Give those light sources room in the frame, and avoid letting them blend into a large area of brightness. That makes the star treatment easier to read as an intentional detail. For a calmer image, keep the light sources less prominent; for a more graphic result, make them a clear part of the composition.
Specialist Note
At dusk, a row of street lamps can become the detail that gives a scene its character. The 4PT marking tells you what kind of accent this filter is designed for: four points radiating from bright highlights, rather than a soft glow. Its 3mm designation identifies this particular version, so it’s the detail to match when you want this exact variant. I’d suggest it to someone composing around lamps, candlelight or other small bright sources; keep those highlights distinct in the frame so the effect has a clear subject. One honest caveat: broad, even light gives the star pattern little to work with.
