Urth 58mm Ethereal 1/4 Diffusion Lens Filter (Plus+)
Urth 58mm Ethereal 1/4 Diffusion Lens Filter (Plus+) | A gentler, softer image
Without a diffusion filter, you usually shape a softer look with lighting or add it later in editing. The Urth Ethereal 1/4 is an attachment lens filter for creating that effect while you take the photograph. It can soften the impression of contrast and give bright areas a gentle bloom, which suits portraits, evening scenes and other images where you want a less crisp, more atmospheric feel. The effect is present in the image as you compose, rather than being something to build afterwards. This filter is best for photographers who want a subtle softening effect, not a sharply defined, clinical rendering in every frame. It gives you a simple way to explore that look in camera, while leaving the lighting, framing and exposure decisions in your hands.
Specialist Note
For a portrait beside a bright window, I’d start with the 1/4 strength and keep the window just inside the frame; it’s a practical way to see how the filter handles bright areas against a face. That 1/4 marking gives you a defined diffusion level, rather than an adjustable effect, so it suits photographers who want a consistent softening look. The 58mm size is the key fit detail: it’s for a lens with a matching 58mm filter thread. I’d reach for it when you want a gentler portrait or a softer-looking light source. One trade-off is that diffusion takes some crispness away, so I’d remove it when fine detail is the priority.
