Urth 58mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 58mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Softer, atmospheric light
Bright signs and bare bulbs can look hard in a portrait or night scene. The Urth Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+ is made for photographers who want a softer, more atmospheric rendering, with a mist-like bloom around bright highlights. It’s an effect filter, so it changes the look of the image rather than simply keeping the scene neutral. That can suit portraits, music or event photography, and city scenes after dark, where small points of light give the effect something to work with. The filter’s name identifies its Black Mist character; the exact strength of that effect isn’t specified here, so I wouldn’t promise a particular degree of diffusion. Its magnetic design is part of the appeal for photographers who want a filter they can put on or take off as the scene calls for it.
Specialist Note
Hard-looking highlights are the problem this filter is intended to soften. The magnetic format means you can attach or remove the filter without repeatedly turning it onto the lens, which is handy when moving between a clean look and a more atmospheric one. The 58mm size refers to the filter diameter, so match it to the diameter marked on your lens. I’d consider it for portraits with bright background lights, or night streets where lamps and signs can create a gentle bloom; keep those highlights in the composition to make the effect visible. It suits photographers who want that stylised rendering, but it’s not the pick when you need a strictly neutral image.
