Urth 58mm Magnetic Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 58mm Magnetic Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+ | Adds a soft glow to highlights
Without a filter, a softer, more atmospheric look usually means shaping the light on set or adding the effect later. The Urth Ethereal White Mist Filter Plus+ gives you that softening in-camera: it diffuses the image and gives bright highlights a gentle glow. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want a more dreamy, less clinically crisp look, especially for portraits, evening scenes and shots with lights in the frame. The effect is part of the image as you make it, so you can judge it while composing rather than trying to recreate it in editing. It’s best when you want atmosphere to be visible but still want your subject and scene to read clearly. Do keep the trade-off in mind: mist diffusion softens detail, so it won’t suit every scene or every style.
Specialist Note
A White Mist filter does soften fine detail, so I wouldn’t reach for it when sharp, crisp rendering is the main goal. It makes sense when you want highlights to bloom gently and the image to feel less stark. The 58mm size is the key for choosing it: pair it with a lens that takes 58mm filters. Its magnetic fitting is handy if you like to move between a clean look and a softened one while shooting. For a backlit portrait, keep a bright light near the edge of the frame and watch how it affects the glow; for night scenes, try including a light source against a darker background. You can then judge how much atmosphere suits the shot.
