Westcott 60/152 Umbrella Optical White Satin+verw Black Cover
Westcott 60/152 Optical White Satin Umbrella with Black Cover | Softer, more controlled flash light
Harsh flash shadows are easier to soften when the light source is spread across a larger area. This Westcott flash umbrella gives you a straightforward way to shape light for portraits, small product setups and other subjects where direct flash looks too hard. The white satin surface diffuses the flash when you shoot through the umbrella; the black cover offers a reflective setup instead. That gives you two ways to work with one light modifier, depending on how you want the light to reach your subject. It suits photographers who want to change the character of a flash without building a complicated lighting setup. Set it up close for a softer, broader effect, then adjust its position to guide the light where you need it. It’s a practical option for a home studio or a simple portrait setup.
Specialist Note
A common first mistake with a large umbrella is leaving it too far from the subject, which can make the light feel less soft than expected. At 60 inches (152 cm), this Westcott gives you a broad source to bring close for head-and-shoulders portraits; move it nearer and watch how the shadows soften. The optical white satin surface is useful when you want the flash to pass through and spread, rather than hit the subject directly. For a small tabletop subject, try aiming the umbrella slightly past it to keep the light gentle. It’s a simple modifier, but you’ll need room to position it comfortably.
