Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella Diffusion Front
Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella Diffusion Front | Soften flash for a broader, gentler look
Westcott 7' Parabolic Umbrella Diffusion Front is a diffusion front made for a seven-foot parabolic umbrella. It’s for photographers who want to soften flash from that large umbrella, rather than use it as an open reflector. The broad umbrella gives you a substantial light source; adding diffusion changes how that light reaches your subject, making it a practical setup for portraits, small groups or still-life work where a gentler look is wanted. It suits studio photographers and anyone building a portrait-lighting setup around a Westcott parabolic umbrella. Think of it as a light-shaping accessory, not a flash or a complete lighting kit: its job is to alter the quality of the umbrella’s light. If you already use the matching umbrella, this front gives you another way to work with the same source, without changing the basic shape of the setup.
Using the diffusion front
Diffusion is useful when direct flash from an umbrella looks too defined for the subject. Bring the light source closer to the person or object, then adjust its angle until the highlights and shadows feel balanced. For a portrait, that can help create a softer impression on the face; for a small still life, it can make reflected light easier to manage. The result still depends on your flash and placement, so treat the front as one part of the lighting setup, not a preset look.
Specialist Note
Once the diffusion front is in place, you can work with the umbrella’s light as a softer source without changing the basic setup. The 7' size means you’re working with a large modifier, which is handy when you want even coverage across a portrait or a small group. Its parabolic form gives you a defined umbrella shape to build around, while the diffusion front softens the light from it. I’d consider it for portrait sessions or tabletop subjects where crisp, direct flash feels too strong. One practical point: diffusion takes some light away, so leave room to raise your flash output if the exposure needs it.
