Westcott Beauty Dish Switch (Silver Interior)

Westcott Beauty Dish Switch (Silver Interior): Shape soft, direct portrait light

Portraits get a soft, direct quality of light from the Westcott Beauty Dish Switch, a 24-inch (61 cm) collapsible beauty dish with a silver interior. Its compact, foldable construction makes it easier to take this style of light from the studio to a location shoot, while the included diffusion cloth softens the output by one stop. The dish is intended for use with strobes, speedlights and monolights, but it needs a separate Westcott Switch Insert mount to connect to a light. That modular mount system is the useful distinction here: choose the appropriate Switch Insert for your light rather than treating the dish as a directly attached modifier. The design is credited to photographer Joel Grimes and pairs a metal frame with heat-resistant materials. Use it for a portrait where you want a beauty-dish look, add the diffusion cloth for softer illumination, or fold it down for a portrait session away from the studio. It also includes a deflector plate for the direct-light beauty-dish setup. At 900 g, it’s a relatively light modifier to carry; the trade-off is that the mounting insert is a separate requirement.

Why it is useful

• 24-inch (61 cm) diameter: This size gives the dish a defined working area for portrait lighting while remaining small enough to fold for transport. The measurement is useful when planning how the modifier will fit into a compact studio or location kit.
• Silver interior: The reflective inner surface is the defining feature of this version. It directs light from the dish towards the subject, creating the direct, shaped illumination associated with a beauty dish.
• Foldable construction: The dish collapses for storage and travel, so it can go along to a location rather than staying assembled in the studio. Its compact format is especially relevant when packing lighting equipment for portrait work on the move.
• Metal frame and heat-resistant materials: The frame provides the structure for the dish, and its materials are specified for heat resistance. This construction matters when using the modifier with continuous lighting, within its stated power limit.
• One-stop diffusion cloth: The supplied cloth softens the light by one stop. It gives you a softer variation on the direct output, useful when the uncovered dish produces a more defined look than the portrait calls for.
• Neutral diffusion fabric: The diffusion material is described as neutral, supporting consistent colour temperature when it is in use. That’s a helpful detail when keeping colour steady across portraits made with the same lighting setup.
• Deflector plate: The plate is included for the beauty-dish setup and blocks direct light from the source. It’s a separate part from the diffusion cloth, so the package offers two distinct components for shaping the output.

Good to know

A Westcott Switch Insert mount is required to attach a light; it isn’t included in the listed package contents. The dish is specified for strobes, speedlights and monolights, so check that you have the appropriate Switch Insert for the light you plan to use. For continuous lighting, the stated maximum is 650 W. These details are worth factoring into your setup before choosing this modifier.
