Westcott Scrim Jim Cine THEC47 DP Kit

Westcott Scrim Jim Cine THEC47 DP Kit: Shape soft light and reflections

The anodised aluminium frame is the defining choice in the Westcott Scrim Jim Cine THEC47 DP Kit, a 1.8 x 1.8m system for controlling light with interchangeable fabric panels. The frame is designed for straightforward assembly, and the panels attach around its four sides with hook-and-loop fastenings. That makes the kit useful for portrait sessions where the quality of the light matters as much as its direction: fit the diffusion cloth to soften outside light, or use the reversible reflector to bring light back onto a subject. The two fabrics give you different ways to work with the same frame. The 3/4-stop diffuser reduces incoming light while keeping colour more natural, according to the supplied product information. The reflector has a silver face for stronger highlights and picked-out detail, and a white face for a softer result. You can choose between those treatments by turning the cloth around, rather than changing to a different reflector. The kit is also relevant to set work where a large diffusion surface or a broad reflection is useful. It packs into the supplied carry bag after the frame and fabrics are taken down. One point to keep in mind: the kit’s effect depends on which cloth and reflector face you put to work.

Light control and frame

• 1.8 x 1.8m working surface: The square frame gives the supplied diffusion and reflector fabrics a broad area to cover. That scale is useful for portraits, where a larger surface can soften light across more of the subject than a small reflector.
• Anodised aluminium frame: The frame is made from anodised aluminium and is described as easy to set up. It breaks down into shorter tubes, so the full frame does not need to remain assembled between uses.
• Hook-and-loop panel attachment: Fastenings run along all four sides of the frame for attaching the fabric panels. This provides a simple way to fit either of the supplied cloths to the same support.
• 3/4-stop diffusion: The diffuser cuts outside light by 3/4 stop. Use it to soften that light while retaining more natural-looking colour, particularly for portrait work in changing ambient light.
• Reversible two-in-one reflector: One side is silver and the other is white. The silver face produces stronger highlights and can emphasise detail, while the white face returns softer light.
• Four frame connectors and four 2D corner connectors: These connectors join the frame tubes and form the corners. The kit separates the corner connectors from the other connectors in its listed contents.
• Carry bag included: The bag is supplied for transporting the kit. With the frame taken apart and the fabrics removed, the pieces can be packed together instead of carrying the assembled frame.
