Western Digital Red Pro 14TB 6GB/s SATA HDD

Western Digital Red Pro 14TB 6GB/s SATA HDD | High-capacity storage for a growing archive

When a working photo or video archive starts to fill the space you’ve set aside for it, a larger hard disk can give you room to plan your storage again. The Western Digital Red Pro is a 14TB SATA HDD: a hard disk drive with a substantial stated capacity, rather than an SSD. It suits someone looking specifically for a high-capacity HDD to include in a storage setup. The title also gives a 6GB/s figure, so you can compare that detail with the requirements of the system you’re choosing for. This is a straightforward option to consider when the kind of drive matters as much as the amount of space. One practical point: capacity alone doesn’t tell you how a complete storage setup will work, so consider the drive alongside the rest of your planned system.

Planning your storage

Before choosing a drive, it helps to think about what you want to keep on it and how you organise that material. A photo library, video files and project backups can all take up space in different ways, so your own archive is the best guide to the capacity you need. If you’re comparing drives, keep the product type and connection details in view as well as the capacity. That makes it easier to narrow your search to the sort of storage you actually want, rather than choosing by a large number alone. The Red Pro’s stated capacity is 14TB, and its title identifies it as a SATA HDD. Those are the concrete points to use when deciding if it belongs on your shortlist.
