Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Mattebox (15mm Studio Adapter)
Wooden Camera UMB-1 Universal Mattebox (15mm Studio Adapter) | A clear route into 15mm studio rigging
Without a dedicated mattebox adapter, rigging a mattebox can become another part of the setup to work out. The Wooden Camera UMB-1 is a universal mattebox with a 15mm Studio Adapter designation, aimed at filmmakers building a studio-style camera rig. It’s relevant when you want the mattebox to be part of that support setup, rather than treating it as a separate accessory decision. The name gives you a useful starting point: this is a mattebox product, and its adapter is associated with 15mm studio rigging. That makes it especially worth considering for operators planning a studio configuration around that format. It’s a specific rigging component, rather than a general camera accessory, so the best reason to choose it is that its stated role matches the setup you’re building.
Planning your setup
Start with the rig you want to build, then consider whether this mattebox and its 15mm studio adapter designation make sense within that plan. That keeps the decision grounded in the actual role named for the UMB-1. For a filmmaker organising a studio-style setup, it gives the mattebox a clear place in the equipment plan; for other needs, the title alone doesn’t give a reason to choose it. Keeping the intended setup in mind is the practical way to assess this particular product.
Specialist Note
This is a focused rigging component, not a universal answer to every mattebox setup; its appeal is the clearly named 15mm Studio Adapter role. I’d consider it for someone planning a studio-style rig where that 15mm support format is already part of the approach. The mattebox designation tells you the job it’s intended to serve, while the adapter wording points to the setup it’s aimed at. For example, you could plan it into a studio camera build with the mattebox as part of the rig, or use the 15mm designation as a guide when organising that setup. It’s a considered buy when those details match your plan.
