Yongnuo YN E3 RT II (Canon ST E3 RT) Transmitter | Fire off-camera flashes for portraits and products

At a portrait session, the light from a flash doesn’t have to come from beside the camera. The Yongnuo YN E3 RT II is a flash trigger and transmitter for firing off-camera flashes, giving it a clear role in portrait and product photography. It’s suited to photographers who want to work with a flash placed away from the camera rather than relying on a flash mounted at the shooting position. The product title also identifies it with Canon’s ST-E3-RT system. For a portrait, moving the flash away from the camera can help you shape where the light falls on your subject. For a product shot, it lets you position the flash in relation to the object instead of the camera. This is a focused tool for triggering off-camera flash, rather than a general-purpose camera accessory.

Specialist Note

The transmitter’s place at your end of the lighting setup makes its job easy to understand: it’s the link you use to fire a flash away from the camera. I’d start a simple portrait with one off-camera flash placed to the side of the subject; for a small product, try positioning that same single flash to one side of the object and adjust its direction to shape the light. That makes this a sensible pick for photographers who want to explore off-camera flash without building a complicated lighting arrangement. Its stated use is specific, which is helpful; it’s a trigger, not a flash itself, so you’ll need an off-camera flash for it to fire.
